After reading their threads, their stance seems to be "too much work", "no use" or "we were there first, you pick up our system". This is well within their rights, but it means that bending over backwards is not a worthwhile goal, either. Referencing hier(7) specifically can't hurt, but even the *BSDs seem to diverge on details.
