And initrd/initramfs is based on cpio content at least on my Mandriva
distro.
$ sudo gzip -cd  /boot/initrd-2.6.33.7-desktop-2mnb.img | file -
/dev/stdin: ASCII cpio archive (SVR4 with no CRC)
