Liz,

Well whatever hank length depends on where I got the hanks from in the
first place.....but I use appriotate dye mix......then place the hank on a
rod of some sort that I can hold......one colour & dip probably 1/3 of hank
in dye.......swirl it about.....then bring it out - if dye not exhausted
use another hank getting a pastel shade......put in new colour usually
something that will grade/blend......turn hank around on rod and dip
another section - keep doing this until all hank is coloured.
So if I start with turqoise I might then got to ruby & then onto blue - it
will overlap with purples and deeper blues. Or if I use yellow - then I
might add red and that will overlap with oranges.
As long as you don't mesh the colours to much when they've not thoroughly
exhausted then you can continue otherwise you will get mud. But even then
there are shades of mud :-)
After it's dry re-wind it to see what nice variations you have gotten.....&
don't worry about darker spots as they will usually just blend in with
whatever craft you are using the yarn for......if it still looks blah then
re-dip it again after you've re-wound it and then you will have the most
interesting yarn around. Did that once and a friend wanted me to dye her a
jumper lot! I couldn't repeat it :-))
