Hi everyone been dyeing a load of our own top lately using Ashford dyes rainbow-style, great results :) I have to spin large amounts of yarn to feed a small group in town who make hats to sell to tourists (cruise ship visitors mostly) - see Falkland Folk on our Web site if interested, and Island Dreams page (name of my multicoloured textured yarns). I also started to dye our own millspun yarns - not dip-dyeing but rainbow style same as the top, this might be a new way of doing it or we may have unvented it... works a treat. I don't try to line up the colour breaks, with the multicoloured handspun - I prefer to spin the singles as they come and ply them ditto,I find that when knitted or crocheted you get fewer stripey effects and a livelier piece of work. With some of the dyed millspun especially, being already plyed when dyed, I find only one or two adjacent stitches will be the same shades when worked up. Great fun swatching to see the results (I don't make hats myself, no time) and although I enjoy Navajo plying I don't use it on yarn spun from rainbow top often, for the same reason - otherwise you need to slipstitch or do Fair Isle to break up the stripes if you get long runs of colour. We have coloured top arriving back from the mill any day now, grey and a dark. I plan on combining these with whiteand each other in various ways, as the naturally coloured hats are selling as fast as the dyed yarn ones... busy busy so won't be posting much. Nice to be back on mail, been gone a while... Re the sheep that was rescued from a minefield, this was some miles from us, have asked the owners if they took a photo of sheep or fleece or both, waiting to hear back and will let you all know if I can post a pic on our site or not. happy spinning everyone rosemary Clive & Rosemary Wilkinson DHF Falklands Dunnose Head Farm Falkland Islands South Atlantic www.falklandwool.com Sign up for our email newsletter!
