Hi FiberNetters,
Washing wool has been covered many times and there are many different
methods, some working better than others. HOT water is a must. Most
commercial processors work between 140 and 160 degrees. Detergent or
commercial wool scouring solutions work the best. Some detergents you buy
are very Alkaline. I've tested a few and the most alkaline are Wind Fresh,
Costco in the bucket, and All. Those with a pH closer to neutral are Tide,
ERA, Dawn. I'm finding I've had to increase the amount of liquid detergent
from 2 cups to 3-4 per fleece with the fleeces weighing from 5 to 8 pounds.
I usually split fleeces over 7 into two separate washings. Medium and fine
wools I usually wash twice to get the great out.
