I've done plenty - throw it in the laundry next time you do a load (no
bleach, no borax, etc. though.) You probably won't have to do it a second
time, but it depends on how felted you want it.
I've used the results for tea cosies, stuffed animals, cat toys (and cat
beds). Have never done caps or mittens (would rather knit them) but I'm
sure it would work fine.
In fact, I showed one to a friend who makes a lot of stuffed animals, and
she started buying 25 cent sweaters at yard sales specifically to felt, for
animals. The best was a black & white ragg sweater that made a great
stuffed hen.
