Onion skin dyeing with any "safe" (non-metallic salt) mordant will yield
fugitive colors. Still, it can be fun to play around with onion skin, as
long as you accept that the colors will fade. It wouldn't be a good idea to
use onion skin on objects made for sale.
Try the dyers list for more information; maybe they have archives on this
subject.
Personally, I much prefer synthetic dyes for their relative safety,
predictability and reproducibility of results. I know it isn't as
romantic-sounding, but........
