I knit lots of socks, as do other members of my guild and some friends. Our
"unofficial" survey has shown that socks wear out MUCH faster when worn with
sandals - Birkies or any other, or shoes where the feel "slip" rather than
shoes such as Tennies or hiking boots that fit tightly. This is regardless
of what you knit with - handspun or store bought, or what fiber from Merino
to Lincoln or Mohair.

I just wore out my very first pair of socks, which were the first pair of
socks I ever knit (about 7 yrs ago) - and it wasn't the handspun kid mohair
loosly knit that gave way, it was an area of the toe where I had decreased
and it wasn't firm enough (have since solved the decreasing problem) and
eventually that pulled so that it wore. Rest of the sock was still in
excellent shape. Have other socks nearly the same age I wear regularly with
tennies and they are alive and well.

Only pair of socks I didn with reinforcing thread in heels I gave as a gift
and they reportedly "shredded" (her words) in the heel area with the yarn
"frizzing" off. Think the nylon cut the wool and I have never used it
again.
