I use that method almost exclusively. I, too, don't care for the 'right' side, or the side that shows when it's immediately joined in a circle for knitting. What I do is knit one row flat, in pattern. Then I join and continue in circles. This places the edge I like on the front. It also makes the sewing up of the tail easier to do. <<Oh, I have been using the homemade drum carder like mad!
