In recent weeks there have been discussions about electric spinners and other spinning devices that are smaller than wheels. I even placed a timid offer for a used Journey Wheel somewhere during that time - but it was already gone.
Still thinking about something to take out of the house, and seeing that Jonathon Bosworth was going to have a stand at the Wisconsin Spin-In last weekend, I really looked forward to having a booth there as well so I'd have time to take a look. Long story short, we were "conveniently placed" across from Mr. Bosworth, his Journey Wheel and two NEW BOOK_SIZE and ATTACHE_SIZE CHARKHAS. The Journey Wheel is super-nice, but I already have 5 treadle wheels. I had never really considered a charkha, as the table model charkhas as they take up considerable space and the usual import ones from India are a bit flimsy - more of a decoration. After a short try of the book-sized model, I was almost ready to place an order - but decided to try the attache-case one as well - what a super device. Both models are exceptional. He has taken the traditional design and improved it with rock-solid parts and exceptional woodworking. He has even designed a portable low table to use when space allows and I also bought his prototype of a weaving shuttle that uses the charkha spindle as the bobbin - eliminating the need to wind and rewind delicate weft yarns. It is not as efficient as an end feed shuttle, but works well on my loom and is like a marvelous new toy.
