Went this morning to my nieces 3rd grade class to demonstrate spinning. Borrowed an
outfit from a friend in the DAR and took my wheel, plenty of wool and cotton for them
to play with, etc. It went very, very well. The children remained interested for the
entire hour, asked lots of questions and all wanted to try the wheel out. What I
thought was real interesting is that we would have one drafting the wool while another
treadled (to save time as much as to make it easier) more of the children wanted to
try treadling than wanted to draft the wool. Must be that mechanical thing. Anyway,
I really enjoyed it and it seems that they did to. I hope it will add to their
learning about colonial American times which is what they are currently studying. Of
course now my niece wants to learn to spin and wants a wheel for Christmas (of course
last night she wanted a laptop and tomorrow it will be something else!).
