Holly, How 'bout this?
I've been trying to dye some of my sister's fleeces (from her sheep, obviously) with pokeberries. Three batches, and three different colors!! All in the orange range...First looked like shallot skins, then a lighter version of that, then pumpkin....I mean, the tips were like the outside skin, and the roots were like the inside flesh! Weird! It spun up very prettily, but was not the magenta I was hoping for. NO more berries till next year. How many people out there are making their own natural dyes? any Dyers Gardens out there? Any suggestions for easy plants to grow for lots of dye? Now I am trying to get some natural brown (dark chocolate) hogget fleece spun up....very short staple, and some vm, it is taking a long time. I did stop to make myself a felted hat of this...it is the same color as my hair. Still trying to get the brim to curl right.... I would love to find an inexpensive source for mohair or alpaca in the Sacramento, CA region if anyone has any, also....I mostly knit next-to-the-skin type projects. also, any Blue Faced Leichesters in CA? Gotta go!
