Try the amonia as an afterbath instead of before dyeing.  I think that
is when the chemical reaction occures that changes the colors.  A good
book for natural dyeing is Natures Colors by Ida Grae.  I think it is
out of print again, but you may be able to find a copy.  It gives
directions for almost any plant you can think of, tells what mordant to
use if needed, how light fast, and what colors to expect.
