As long as you're using the right dye for your yarn (acid dyes for wool, cellulose dyes for plant fibers), you should be able to overdye those colors to deep purples & blues. The underlying color will be different from dyeing on bright white, but I've successfully dyed ugly browns or beiges to nice shades of dark blues & purples.
The blanket selvedges are available from Pendleton mills. They weave up quickly and are quite economical, except that they are heavy to ship. Here's the contact info from the Pendleton FAQ pages: Where can I get Pendleton fabrics and mill ends (selvedges, yarns, blanket headings etc.) by phone or mail order? Pendleton's Woolen Mill Store, which is located in Portland, OR, makes these products available to consumers across the country. If you contact the store with a description of the product you want, the staff will send small snips for your review before purchase.
