Re: fine spinning. I believe I heard some years ago that 3 fibers are needed to create yarn. That's the theory. Doing it is something else.
Singles for socks: Check in Priscilla Gilbson Roberts "Ethnic Socks and Stockings". I think this is a fabulous book, both for inspiration (the patterns easily translate to sweaters, scarves, etc.) and technique. Many ethnic socks and stockings are knit with singles. Others are made from 2 unplied singles held together, and some are 2 ply. Choosing a longer stapled wool and spinning a combed preparation with a short draw (true worsted) creates a strong shiny yarn. Lincoln is great, but a harsh next to the skin. Priscilla suggests a Lincoln/Finn cross. Lincoln for strength and luster and Finn for softness. She also suggests trying some dual coated fleeces including Navajo Churro and Karakul. For singles I wash and hang under just enough tension to even out the twist. The shiny Lincoln takes dyes beautifully - both on white wool and grey.
