Elaine on the hand cranked sock machine I try to get 8 to 9 stitches per inch 
and that seems to be fine for the sportweight wool yarns that I like to use. 
The one thing about hand knitters (a real skill) is that they can make socks 
out of any thing they want to and also have the ability to make up the fancy 
designs on the socks, that you can't do on the old hand crank machine. Thanks
