Hi Judy, When visiting Plimouth Plantation in MA a few years ago I asked about spinning wheels as none were visiable. Their answer was, "Spinning was not done and fabric was purchased from England." I got the impression that spinning was beneath them, it was ok to make clothes, but not to make the yarn or fabric. I believe that was part of England's way of keeping the colonies dependent upon the "Mother" country, as you mentioned.
