While we're on the past - last night we were invited to sign up for Internet
banking from our German bank - and while on their site, decided to take a
peek at real estate since we'd left.
Long story short - we took a look at Luebeck (once a crown jewel of the
Hanseatic League with 3 city walls) and went looking for one of those
properties left from the Middle Ages and what they go for - we found a
"darling" house from 1550 for only about $120,000. 2.5 story - absolutely
precious - dimensions?
LOT SIZE: 350 sq. ft.
LIVING SPACE: 640 sq. ft.
This is the city where Thomas Mann wrote "Buddenbrooks" - and the other
merchant houses (sometimes also containing a shop) weren't much different in
size. This is a natural response to the expense of property within the
secure city walls - and also a reminder that when we look at textile tools
from the perspective of a 2500 sq. ft. home, we can't apply the same spatial
perspectives to other eras.
