Another factor in sock wear is how the wearer wears the socks. (Whew!!! Say that 3 times fast!) I've experienced some people who wear them out very quickly and others who don't. They also wear them out in different places on the sock. Everyone's feet and gait are different as are the shoes or boots they wear most often. My DH has a wear spot at the top of the foot where his second toe rubs. I wear under the heel first on handspun wool socks but at the back of the heel on commercial cotton socks. Commercial socks aren't reinforced with the heel stitch like my handknit ones. I even carry the heel stitch down under the heel for a short way. I like the fit and I think it lasts a bit longer.
As for adding mohair in the wool for reinforcement, that does work to a point. But I've had socks where the wool wore off leaving just the mohair holding the knitting together! Socks that include mohair don't felt like pure wool ones, but I do like a bit of felting which I feel adds to the longevity and the comfort. I don't like to feel the stitches under my foot. As the saying goes: your mileage may vary! Knitting socks is so much fun that you can keep trying out all the various methods and ideas until you hit upon the ones you like best.
