Subject: Re: Middle Eastern Wheels

the Middle Eastern wheels were the wheels now known as "table top
charkhas" - if you watch eBay for spinning wheel auctions, you'll often see
someone selling one from Pakistan, Turkey or elsewhere in the middle east.
Often the drive wheel was simply two sets of spokes with string crosses
making the path for the drive band. They were fitted with either a flyer or
a spindle - have seen examples of both.

Sara, Hi! My curiosity is peaked by your description of the drive wheel being a set of spokes. My parents found 2 strange objects at an Estate Sale, which were labeled "Antique Mennonite Spinning Wheel parts". However I, as well as the other spinners I know, cannot figure out how this could be part of a spinning wheel. (And, although uncertain about this, think they are probably not Mennonite either.)

(Now here's the part that applies to your post.) They are also spokes radiating out from a hub. 2 spoked "wheels" with the hub in between, like an axle and wheels. Or in other words, looks like an H. I am pretty certain it goes this direction, rather than facing the wheel, b/c on one of them, there is a suspended weight on the hub (or axle part) in between the 2 wheels. They come apart - you can disassemble the spokes from the hub, and they are very well balanced, and will spin. There is a little metal pointy thing coming out from the axel part - on the outside of the spoked wheels, like it was meant to sit in some kind of frame or holder.

Could these be a part of something like the tabletop Charkas you were describing? And if so, how would one attach the drive band part to make it spin?

If anyone knows of anything similar to what I am describing, I would LOVE to know what it is, and how it works. (I have 2 of them.) Thank you! Ginger
