After 30 years of spinning, I am craving a really wonderful handmade wheel. Right now, I have a dt Lendrum that is quite nice, but not really filling the bill for me. I spin right hand forward, and have read that a mirror wheel (flyer on the right) is best for this style. I also much prefer scotch tension over double drive. I'm not an especially fast spinner, I like to watch what I am doing, enjoyment of the process is as important to me as the finished product! I'd love a finely-tuned machine made from beautiful hand-finished wood to add to the enjoyment of the process.
I don't know many other spinners, and have never spun on a mirror wheel, or any handmade wheel. Can you help me? I'd love to have a "review" from any of you who use hand-made wheels, and to develop a list of makers. I live in the Pacific NW. Thanks in advance.
BTW, has anyone seen the auction that's up on eBay right now for a 1982 wheel built by Betty Roberts? If not, go look...I've never seen a more beautiful wheel..but it's single treadle, upright and double drive so it's not for me. But GORGEOUS!
