I have one of the older designs of Ashford country spinners (there isn't
the big square framework) It's still a flyer brake though, with a nylon
line over the flyer at the orifice, attched to a spring on one side and
tightened by turning a peg, just like the scotch tension on the trad and
traveller.

I have trouble getting easy spinning on this wheel, it's a bit heavy to
treadle (single treadle) and getting the takeup right without the drive
band slipping is tricky. I can see why they redesigned it - the square
framework and DT both seem good ideas.
