A friend of mine just found an old, in excellent condition, Gilmore 32" loom at a garage sale. Came with books, etc.
WOW! Lucky friend! The Gilmore is still being made in Stockton, California. It's a really well-built, well designed heavy-duty loom. Mr Gilmore started making looms in the '30s. When I bought mine in the early '80s, he had a big workspace filled with power machinery and 2 employees. He no longer did much of the work himself, but he showed me around. After his death, the business was purchased by some folks who are still making his design with few changes. From what I can see on their website, the looms look just as beautiful as the ones Mr Gilmore made. If you do a Google search, you'll find the website.
I wove on my 4-shaft, 46" loom for 20 years, and only sold it when I had a chance to buy a well-priced countermarche. The Gilmore is a strong, easy to use workhorse. Mine was beautiful maple finished with Danish oil. Looked great in my living room. I'd love to have another, smaller 8-shaft version someday. They make a new model called the "little Gem" that looks great, folds up to be quite portable, but looks as if it would be very strong and rigid when set up.
