Yes, you get a postcard indicating receipt of material, that, if
selected becomes the property of Interweave. This could appear in
print up to a year or two later. If you do get published, it can
take a year to know about it - and then the publication date is still
months away. If they choose not to print, you simply hear nothing

What Sara describes is more or less standard with magazines. The ownership is a detail that is important to both author and publisher. Unless specifically stated it used to be assumed that the magazine publisher owns rights to reprint articles in future issues of the same magazine, including special issues. The magazine publisher does not own rights to use the material in a book or other publications. The rules may have changed since I was a magazine contributor. Questions about ownership are legitimate and reasonable.

A good way to approach any magazine is to send a proposal to the editor telling about the topic and your qualifications to be the writer. Keep it brief, but be sure to focus on the topic and your qualifications. A history of writing/publishing experience is helpful, but not essential. If you have a *short* sample of your best previous published writing, send it along. Never just give a list of your publications. Make things easy for the editor, and show only your best stuff.
