How much dry ice should one use?

That's one of those almost unanswerable questions. A cubic foot of CO2 gas weighs about a tenth of pound. Therefore a big leaf bag full would contain about a quarter pound. However, this is a leaky system, so in real life you should figure on at least a half pound of dry ice for a leaf bag or similar sized container. Err on the side of excess.
I used to buy dry ice at a big frozen fish plant and their minimum chunk was like ten pounds, so a normal chunk should go a long way. It does vanish quickly, so use it soon after purchase. It will not help to put it in your freezer.
