Anyone hear of historical use of Spanish Moss??

Ann,

Spanish Moss has been used as a dye plant no need for a mordent, just
simmer it with the fiber to produce a soft gray-green color. It was also used
as a mattress stuffing and building insulation by early settlers.

As for spinning and weaving with it, well it just doesn't work, I tried.
There are native bast fibers and some tree barks that can be worked but I
don't know of any evidence that the Timucua worked in fiber. It seems most
clothing was animal skins, decorated with feathers, shells. Maybe in the
Spanish moss reference a basic leather outfit was decorated with moss. As you
stated a non fiber person might not know the difference.

Ron
