Merry, were the leaves you used still green or had they assumed their fall color? I found interesting info in Google - the twigs & bark are used independently as well as the sap-like fluid (called the 'concrete' stage - reminds me of amber! - used for different things at different stages during the growing cycle: a cough medicine as well as against diarrhea & dysentery in children, and chewed to sweeten the breath. This 'concrete' stage becomes yellowish rather than transparent, so it may well be part of the dying process with the leaves.
