You take a fleece sample, mid-side, and send it to Yocom-McCall, Whittick, or University of Nevada Reno. Whittick and UNR uses OFDA2000 laser which is more accurate. Yocom-McCall's method looks only at a cross section on the cut end of the staple. They need about a 4" x 4" sample off the animal. OFDA2000 measures the micron along the whole staple length and graphs it so that you can see how the micron changes throughout the whole year (if you're sample was 12-months growth). This gives you the chance to see how feed changes and environment impact the quality of your fiber. They also can use a much smaller sample amount. In fact, for one animal that I wanted tested, I only had one lock and they were able to use that.

You can expect to pay somewhere around $7 per sample.

How do you do a "histogram"? Do you send a sample of the wool somewhere
or can you do that yourself?
