None of the small processors in the US use this method of getting rid of
vegetation. We (they) scour using
detergents that you would use on your laundry. Some use biodegradable
chemicals designed especially for the wool industry.

Only the very large textiles mills use the sulphuric acid and then it is
used after the fabric has been woven. The two large scouring
facilities in the US use biodegradable chemicals or good old fashioned lye.
