Yesterday when I did grocery shopping I asked at our local Shaw's
bakery for a large plastic bucket. I'd gotten one there once
before. Sure enough they gave me a clean 5 gallon bucket that some
of their mixes came in. Just thought this would be a good idea to
pass around - don't know if other grocery stores would be as
cooperative, but it's worth an ask.

I used to get them at a small-town bakery in Minnesota. Mostly ever a
charge, but some times a waiting list. They are wonderful for
making/storing kraut or pickles too. They are food grade plastic, and
have good lids as well.
