Oh Holly:

I got the most interesting picture in my mind about the Yak Overcoats. The first thing I thought of is that they must be awfully warm with the overcoat over the fiber...but they wouldn't get any frostbite... <giggle> However, if the fiber is Yak hair, it sounds awfully short. There's a woman and man who live close to me and have a male and female yak and two yakettes (what's a baby yak called anyway?), a male (newborn this year) and female (1 year). The fiber is almost as long as my Icelandics with some of it even longer.

It sounds like you've taken on quite a job. Yes, keep the tube of linen because you know the person won't be using it for weaving and they may come back again for another repair job. Or if it makes you feel funny, ask them if they want it. They'll either say yes or no and you could wind up with it anyway. It would be nice to have it if they ever came back to have you repair it again though.

Try burning a small bit of it to see what it smells like. You might be able to nail it down by doing that or doing some of the other fiber tests. It could be camel or water buffalo. I know hair smells like hair, but it might smell just different enough to pinpoint what it is.

Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone!

Jet

Do I charge the entire cost of the tube of linen even if only a little
is used? I wouldn't have bought it if not for this project, but it
won't take much.

And has anyone heard of or seen something like this rug before? The
owner doesn't know anything more than that his MIL owned it before it
was passed to his wife. I think it's definitely not a US craftsperson's
work. That short coarse stuff is just too unusual.
