I "won" a pound of the yak fiber on ebay and am delighted with not only the
fiber but the service. I've not tried spinning it yet due to other time
committments, but I can highly recommend the source so far!

I got the most interesting picture in my mind about the Yak Overcoats.
The first thing I thought of is that they must be awfully warm with the
overcoat over the fiber...but they wouldn't get any frostbite... <giggle>
However, if the fiber is Yak hair, it sounds awfully short. There's a
woman and man who live close to me and have a male and female yak and two
yakettes (what's a baby yak called anyway?), a male (newborn this year)
and female (1 year). The fiber is almost as long as my Icelandics with
some of it even longer.
Hi Jet - here is more yak info repeated from and earlier e-mail.
---------------------------
Some months ago I connected with Mika Laiho who is a Finnish person
working with an originally FInnish-government-financed handicraft project
in the Mongolian countryside, trying to employ local people in here. One
specialty they have been working on is yak winter hair.
We experimented with my ordering some of the down to be sent to me in
Sweden, but there were some technical difficulties in getting my money to
her without paying big fees to the banks involved.
In the interval Mika sent me a box of the hand-carded Yak down, and you
can take my word that it is gorgeous and wonderfully soft. Mika recommends
blending it with some wool when spinning to give some added strength to
the yarn. Highly Recommended!
The financial difficulties have been worked out now, and you can order the
Yak plus some neat-looking handcrafts direct from Mongolia using a VISA
card or from eBay using the payment method of your choice. PayPal is also
available as a payment method.
To order direct go to http://www.mongolisshop.net and just follow the
directions. When you want to place the order you will be switched over to
the Kahn Bank's web pages where you can pay with a VISA card on a secure
web site just as you would in the US or Europe or wherever*. The site has
both English and Russian instructions. Mongolia was once part of the USSR,
but is now an independent republic with English as the official
international language.
The eBay store site is at http://stores.ebay.com/MongoliaShop

The usual disclaimer from me that I have no financial interest in Mongolia
Shop - just passing along some interesting information. My initial
connection with Mika was when she e-mailed me about finding a source of
inexpensive carding cloth. You may remember my asking about sources on
FiberNet.
*(from above) If you are concerned about using a credit card on line,
check with your card issuer to see if you can use a one-time number for
ordering on line (in Mongolia or New Jersey or anywhere) My VISA provider
will give me a temporary number on line. I use the temp numbers for all my
on-line purchases. My card provider is the giant MBNA in Delaware, USA.
Susanne's and my Swedish banks have similar arrangements. Your card issuer
probably does too.
