You are referring to a McMorran yarn balance I think. My handspun
apparently varies enough in density that I don't always get a reliable
result. Usually it doesn't matter, but if yardage is a critical issue
(and recently it was), the yardage counter is just the trick. It is
also useful for measuring weaving warp. I'm a very beginning weaver too.

I can't remember the name of the scale that allows you to weigh a
small amount of yarn (really small), and then gives you a formula to
find the approximate amount of yards/skein.
