I recall the rhyme that that Finewool felts and Down wool doesn't. Is
Corriedale a down breed?
Today I had an interesting experience in making an accidental shaped
shawl. I had put the warp on to accommodate 3 scarves across in suitable
colours to go with the fuzzy mohair yarn I had for weft. It worked fine for
the scarves that were woven with 3 shuttles across.
But the remainder of the warp I wanted to weave a shawl with one
shuttle across. Fine and dandy. Did notice some difference with the
mystery fingering warp yarn. Not so much difference where I used it
alternately with a merino warp yarn. Commercial all. The merino by itself
was a great warp to weave in.
Then I hemstitched and took it off the loom. Put it in the washing
machine with wool soap and gave it a brief wash, and a spinout. Into the
dryer for 10 minutes. Still dampwet when taken out and brushed in 2
directions.
The interesting thing was how the merino hard twist warp yarn had
felted severely in both directions, and the fringe was an impossible tangle.
Whereas the mystery fingering yarn hardly felted at all and maintained all
its length. Then the 3 blue 'mohair' 6 inch stripes at the beginning,
middle and end, fulled more than the other stripes. Must have been brushed
wool. And the fingering must have been mostly nylon.
But the shawl is nicely shaped with the merino edge for close to the
neck, and flaring out to a wider lower edge with the nylon. I am deciding
whether this is all a happy accident.
