I googled "Downs breed" sheep and found the term used mostly in AU and NZ sites.

Where Downs is the opposite of Ups (aka ours) Yep, I googled too with similar results. Google is a compilation of strings of characters and their contexts and links. It does that very well - no more nor less.

It's a horse race like so many things. I always thought down was from geese and ducks, until it came fro rabbits and then dogs and then whatever. At this point it is a marketing term.

So many words, so many meanings......   :-?

I still say Downs is referring to one of many lower altitude areas in UK - as apposed to the hill sheep regions
