My take on Down vs Downs

was OK originally from some area in the Motherland

but now referred more to a type of breed ummmm maybe that should be micron, whatever the correct terminology is.

i.e. from The New Zealand Woolcraft Book by Plowman/Jackson in the back p186 is a grade appendix for USA

Fine wools - Crossbreed wool breeds - Medium wool breeds - Long Wool breeds
and
within that comes the named sheep breed - Dorset & Hampshire and various other counties type sheep breed are in Medium section.

UK mentions Dorset Down, Hampshire Down. Oxford Down, Southdown but also there is Dorset Horn, Exmoor Horn

SA doesn't have any Down[s] or Horn[s] :-)

AU also mentions Short Wools or Downs [!] and lists some of the above mentioned for UK in the section

sooooooo it I would begin to think it was more a spelling situation that what is actually correct IMHO :-)
