Dike sheep are the sheep that graze the sea dikes from Brittany to
the Skaggarak at the tip of Denmark.
Various breeds are used - in Holland, Texel are the most common.
In Germany, the "German White-faced meat sheep" is the most populous
- this breed being similar to the British crossbred - developed in
the 1920's from German marsh sheep (not unlike Frisians) and various
British longwool breeds - they have a coarse, medium staple wool
that is delightfully clean and easy to spin. The dikes have no bushes,
burrs, or other VM and these hardy animals are kept outside 10-12
months a year.
Yes, with all of modern technology, there is still NO machine that
tamps down the dirt, thus keeping burrowing animals out and erosion
to a minimum - while mowing the grass and fertilizing it at the same
time.
