I have rheumatoid arthritis in my hands (not severely disabling but
painful) and I have torn some ligament or tendon in my left thumb
lifting heavy books in the library. Now I am told by the OH&S people not
to try and get books from the top or bottom shelves (and where might
that slave be who is going to get those books for me?). Heat helps, so
make sure you keep your hands warm and even run warm water over them
occasionally. Sometimes those supportive gloves can actually restrict
circulation which doesn't help. Do not do the same activity whatever
task for long periods. Trade off with different items and activities. If
you cannot take anti-inflammatories orally try the rub-in kind. Not just
the stinky kinds like Ben-gay but I go through great gobs of Voltaren (I
hope this is the same name as it is sold as in the US). There are lots
of other tools and gadgets for people with weak hands. Check out
whomever controls disability services as there may be an assisted living
centre where you can try various gadgets. I hope you hasve a supportive
partner to open things and carry stuff for you!
