why not the simple pot holder loom? with the sock loops?

Because it is no longer possible to buy halfway decent sock
loops.

I was delighted to find an old-time potholder loom several
years ago, and horribly disappointed in the loops. They
were not only made of fibers that you don't want anywhere
near a stove, no two were the same length or thickness, and
many couldn't be put on the loom at all. I *think* that I
managed, with much struggle, to make a warped and mis-shapen
. . . something or the other.
