Yes, oil the flyer. Oil the bearings where the flyer fits in and oil the
bobbin bearings on the flyer shaft as well. Clean out the stray fibers and
oil often, every hour or two of spinning. You may stain the wheel a bit, but
it will spin much better.
When I got my wheel it squeaked like yours and I disconnected the treadles
and oiled the wheel bearing, then oiled the two treadle bearings. The
squeaks stopped and the wheel spun smoother & faster, which to me meant it
was a good idea.. I oil the wheel bearing & clean & oil the treadles once
in a while now, and every time I change back and forth from the plying
head, since it is apart then.
I use basic light machine oil, having worked my way through the gun oils and
bike oils and decided there is not much difference.
