My experience (on a Brother, currently unfortunately in storage because
there isn't really enough room for the wheels, a loom, a new baby, and
the knitting machine, and it was the least-used of the lot) is that a
knitting machine is relatively easy on the hands -- you are just
holding a handle and pushing it back and forth -- but was a little
tough on my shoulders because you need to put some muscle into the
pushing, and it can be relatively wide in relation to your body.
