Absolutely !!! I would recommend cooking your Walnut hulls outside if at all possible. It does have quite an odor ...... I know :-)
The other thing I learned from experience (too late).....I recommend getting some netting, or some old sheer curtain and making sort of a tea bag for the nuts before putting them in the pot for soaking. (yes you will lose a little bit of the dye, but it is a horror trying to strain all those little bits that break off as the hull disintegrates). When the dye process is completed, just lift it out of the pot, let it drain and you will have some super golden brown dye. It does stain the hands, so be sure to use rubber gloves...yeah, found that out the hard way too !!! Barbara : RE: Natural Dye for Brown Black Walnut Hulls! Get them when they are brown and crumbly and almost falling off of the nut. Soak them in water for several weeks before heating to remove the colorant. If necessary soak them in pure grain alcohol such as Everclear and then cover with water to soak. The alcohol will act as a preservative as well. il To restore send: set mail To stop mail temporarily mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] with the message: set nomail To restore send: set mail
