I made some from 2 rubber grommets, 5 CDs and a 30 to 36 inch long 3/8 inch
dowel, sharpened one end on a belt sander and rounded the bottom. It
helps if you have a hole or depression rest the bottom, so the spindle
doesn't go skittering across the floor.

Fiber selection and prep is critical. You'll only have one hand to hold
the fiber so it has to be easy to draw. Use loftily carded long fiber.

Drawing out is a 2 step process. On the First draw, say about 2 yards, you
are thinning the fiber supply to about the thickness of a pencil, and
adding a little twist so it hangs together a bit. The 2nd draw you are
taking that drawn-out-slightly-twisted section and adding the final twist
to it.

You can't accomplish both steps at the same time because the final amount
of twist makes so much friction that the fibers won't slide. There's a
variant of this technique on my video.
