Recently I was surfing some German spinning sites and came across the tip
that the good old dike sheep (German White-faced Meat Sheep in official
designation) make wonderful socks. This is a sort of super-Romney - coarse,
mild luster, medium crimp, long staple and indestructible. When we lived
there the opinion was that it was just for rugs or outerwear. It never was
too good for felting - NOW it has been picked up by sock yarn spinners -
they make a fine plied yarn, knit the socks and machine wash/dry the socks.
It apparently softens them up without felting and makes them a tad fuzzy
like mohair and they wear like iron. A sort of superwash, if you will, that
is durable.
