That sounds like what we called "french braids" when I wore
pigtails. a simple
three-strand braid, but at each crossing, you add an onion
or a strand of hair to the strand being crossed.
The fish braid is actually a particular variation on the French braid
(and takes much longer). Rather than bringing whole strands across,
you bring just a small portion of the strand across each time. It ends
up looking like two linked masses of hair wrapped in much thinner
strands of hair, which sit nearly horizontal, rather than at an angle.
(I used to be in charge of french braiding both my hair and my sister's
when we went on trips; I only rarely did a fish braid but I did learn
how)
