I used some undyed Jacobs that went great. I've also used some wool that
was dyed (don't know what kind, staple length about 2 inches) that was
nightmareish.

If Jacobs wool worked for you at the start, then I'd suggest using more
Jacobs for a time. Once you've built up your confidence, then try
something else.
That aside, I don't think there's a better all-around fiber than Romney.
It's easy to work with, usually easily obtained, and generally spins
up into a good, all-purpose yarn.
