With silk roving I find that giving it a little predrafting helps it not
stick. You don't have to do much just enough to break the "stick". It makes
a big difference.

I am learning too, just having bought my wheel this summer. I have found
that merino and merino blends (merino & silk, merino & alpaca) are
really easy to spin. Also, I have really enjoyed alpaca blends. Alpaca
by itself can be slippery, but it is very strong. Silk blended into a
mix for me makes it stronger and stickier and thus easier to spin, but I
have had some trouble with silk by itself.
