<<What's Halcyon's
line of 8/2 like? I was surprised at how good their prices were, but
after working with Karded Cotton, I'm leery of buying without
recommendations.>>

I would call and order a sample sheet from Halcyon, if you can't tell from the photos on the website.

They're only a couple of dollars, and well worth it to see the actual yarn and colors -

<<And I
found a runner that a friend crocheted for me, and a couple small
cafe-style curtains I crocheted--both are over 20 years old and have
large stain-like discolorations of brown as if someone started to
dip-dye them in tea and quickly changed her mind--yet there haven't been
any attempts to dye, or any accidental spillings, either.>>

It probably is old soap/detergent that wasn't completely rinsed out.

First thing, soak both in cold water (prefereably distilled) overnight and then wash gently, again in cold water, with mild dish liquid.

If that doesn't do it, I'd try soaking over night in cold water with some peroxide. Then you can move up to non chlorine bleach, with bleach as the last resort.
