Have overdyed both mercercized and unmercerized cotton yarns, although none were 16/2. I used Procion dyes and was very pleased with the results. I created a "painted warp." I warped the yarns on a board, tied them loosely but frequently and worked on a strip of wide plastic wrap. I let the dyes flow and blend but also left some of the original colors as they were. The results were like a ikat-like and quite lovely. In previous classes, we used large stencil brushes to disperse the dyes. On my last projects, I just spooned the liquid dyes randomly. I made larger skeins for the dye process. After the dyed skeins had cured for 48 hours, I washed and dried them. I then split the skeins up to create more pattern on the loom. The dyes came from Dharma Trading company in San Rafael, CA. Note: I have NO affiliation with Dharma but have used their products successfully. I was given 16/2 unmercerized cotton for a shawl from Handwoven that I want to try. Unfortunately, the colours are little light and dull for my liking. I am thinking of overdyeing, but have only done this with wool. Any suggestions on dyes, size of skein, etc. would be appreciated. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
