Margot - I also have a mismatched pair of carders. I got them about 30 years ago at Yarn Depot in San Francisco, one of the old old fiber shops that no longer exists. There was a bargain basket mostly filled with yarns, but I found these cards. They seem identical except for the handles, so I always know which is left and which is right.
Now that I have thumb arthritis I am thinking that I can put pipe insulation on the handles and learn to card very very lightly, which I probably should have been doing all along.
